Battle Of Britain - August 1940Â
Â
For the past several weeks the Luftwaffe has been probing the RAF defenses over Allied shipping in the English Channel and over the southeastern coast of England. Now, the battle is moving into a new phase as the German bombers begin to range further inland, targeting RAF bases in England. The German intent is to draw the British into a series of large, decisive clashes and destroy the RAF in the air and on the ground. The RAF hopes to prolong the aerial battle of attrition, and wear down the Luftwaffe to the point that it cannot adequately protect any attempt by the German Army to cross the Channel and invade southern England. Each air force faces numerous challenges. The RAF uses radar and a centralized command structure to concentrate its small number of planes against the German attackers. The Luftwaffe's single-engined fighter, the Bf-109, carries only enough fuel to fight as far inland as London for just a few minutes.

The world's first truly strategic air campaign is about to begin...

Operation Tungsten North Sea 1944
Â
The Admiralty and Commander-in-Chief had decided that the Fleet Air Arm should attack the Battleship KMS Tirpitz early in April, as soon as the aircraft carrier Victorious had completed her post-refit trials and the date of 4th April 1944 was chosen. The attack was code-named Operation "Tungsten". Six carriers were involved using a wide array of Fleet Air Arm aircraft. Corsairs Hellcats Martlets and Seafires along with Barracuda Torpedo bombers. Although heavily damaged, the Tirpitz was not sunk. Luftwaffe reaction to the attack was minimal. Follow up strikes Operation Planet and Operation Brawn were scheduled for late April and Early May, but were canceled because of bad weather.
Â
Fiery Sky/Frigid Sea recreates the situation off Norway during the Spring of 1944. In this case the weather is just good enough for carrier operations. Operation Tungsten as well as Operation Planet and Brawn are carried out. The Royal Navy must not only attack the Tirpitz but also disrupt the Kriegsmarine's and Luftwaffe's ability to retaliate against the fleet by striking satellite ports and bases. In turn the Luftwaffe must protect the Tirpitz and German military installations as well as strike back at the Royal Navy.

Leaning Into France - Early 1941
No sooner had the defensive victory of the Battle of Britain been won then the more ardent spirits in and around Fighter Command began looking for new laurels. Lord Trenchard had said that the time had come for Fighter Command to go on to the offensive. He thought that we should now “lean towards France” and he advocated a system of offensive sweeps of fighters across the Channel which was along the same lines as that used by us in our operations over the Western Front in the First World War.
So the institution of "Rhubarbs" – which were sweeps of massed fighters -
began; the Germans were largely unimpressed. However they paid far
more attention and often reacted when the fighters were accompanied by
bombers. Bomber Command it must be said did not greatly care for their
role as bait. These joint operations became known as "Circuses". Between January and
June 1941 they involved 190 bomber sorties and the "Rhubarbs" and
"Circuses" together involved 2,700 sorties by fighters.
Â
The theatre of this struggle became an air space over Belgium and
northern France, contained within the arch stretching from Ostend,
through Lille, Lens, Amiens, Rouen and through to Le Havre. That was the
arch denoting the maximum range of British fighters. Numerous units of
Luftwaffe fighters, located mainly near St. Omer and Amiens were engaged
almost daily with Allied fighters over their own territory. They
cooperated extremely well with German AA artillery, which in 1941 became
very potent being great in numbers and very accurate at all ceilings.
The "deck" was littered with machine guns. Thus the scene is set on 9th January 1941, a freezing cold day. The
RAF fueled and armed their fighters and sent off the first fighter sweep
to mark the return of Offensive Operations to France...

Â
In late April, early May of 1944 RAF bomber command received intel on Germany tooling up for production of their Dornier DO335. This aircraft could not be allowed in the air in great numbers.  Along with this information, they were informed of Jumo increasing capacity for their engine manufacturing, which would enable more ME262’s. The RAF handed this intelligence off to the Mighty 8th Army Air Force Bomber Command. They collaborated with the 9th Air Force, to put a combined effort of over 700 aircraft in the air for this mission. So important was the success of this mission, that P-51B, P-38J, and P-47D were pulled together to escort the bombers. The bomber force consisted of 8th and 9th B-17 Flying Fortresses, and B-24 Liberators. Nothing was being held back.
Â
On April 24, 1944 the 8th AF directed all three Bomb Divisions to attack a.) the Munich area airfields and manufacturing targets, b.) the Friedrichshafen area airfields and, c.) the Gablingen/Leipheim airfields. The Eighth would put up 716 bomber 'effectives' with the largest force comprised of 268 B-17s in 1st TF attacking Erding, Landsberg and Oberpfaffenhofen. The Oberphaffenhofen target was the Dornier complex currently tooling up for the Do335. The Landsberg attack was not only against the Me262s reputed to be on the base but also at the manufacturing facility for the Jumo turbine blades.
The Eighth Fighter Command, combined with P-47s and P-51s from 9th AF and RAF Mustangs and Spitfires, put over 800 fighter aircraft in the air to support this broad attack against German aircraft industry. The LuftFlotte Reich defending force this day, was comprised of JG1, JG3, JG5, JG11, JG27, JG53, JG106, I./JG301, III./ZG26 and II./ZG76 plus a temporary placement of III./JG26 from LuftFlotte 3. In total there were more than 275 single engine and 40 twin engine fighters which were directed to attack the 8th Air Force along the southern Germany/Swiss border from Stuttgart/Worms through Ulm and Augsburg and Munich.

Â
Approximately 33 Staffels of day fighters was put in the air to engage the 8th AF. The German fighter force in the Munich area was predominantly Bf 109G-6’s with a few Bf 109G-6/U4’s and Bf 109G-5’s. In addition Sturmstaffel I, a new experimental bomber attack force, comprised of heavily armed and armored FW 190 A-7’s, plus approximately 25 Bf 110 G-2’s from III./ZG26 and 12 Me410A-1’s from II./ZG76 were directed to the Munich area.
Â
This would be the last time the Western Front Luftwaffe units had the ability to concentrate its fighter force on purely stopping Allied heavy bomber raids. Soon it would be bleeding off its fighter forces in the skies above Normandy.

Battle Of Britain - August 1940 - The Attack on the Airfields
Â

It is August, 1940. For the past several weeks the Luftwaffe has been probing the RAF defenses over Allied shipping
in the English Channel and over the southeastern coast of England. Now, the battle is moving into a new phase
as the German bombers begin to range further inland, targeting airbases in England. The German strategy is to
draw the British into a series of large, decisive clashes and destroy the RAF in the air and on the ground. The RAF
hopes to prolong the aerial battle of attrition, and wear down the Luftwaffe to the point that it cannot adequately
protect any attempt by the German Army to cross the Channel and invade southern England. Each air force faces
numerous challenges. The RAF uses radar and a centralized command structure to concentrate its dwindling number
of planes against the Lutwaffe attackers. The Luftwaffe's single-engined fighter, the Bf-109, carries only enough fuel
to fight as far inland as London for just a few minutes. The world's first truly strategic air battle is about to begin...

===== EVENT RULES ================================
1.) This is a one-life, one-plane event.
2.) The level bombing bombsight calibration method will be manual, NOT the Main Arena "automatic" method.
3.) Bomber formations are enabled for the Ju-88. (The listed "min" and "max" count pilots, not drones.)
4.) Ju-88 and Ju-87 "Stuka" bombers may NOT exceed an altitude of 19,000 feet. No other planes have an altitude restriction.
5.) The Luftwaffe C-in-C may designate ONE squad of up to fifteen (15) Bf-110C-4 as "Erprobungsgruppe 210" (Test Group 210) and that squad may carry bombs.  No other Bf-110s may carry bombs. Erpr. 210 must all fly together as one flight, although they may fly in company with one or more other squadrons.
6.) The following planes may NOT carry any air-to-surface ordnance or drop tanks:Â Hurricane, Spitfire, Bf-109
7.) After they are shot down, players may join bombers as aerial gunners. Players may NOT operate guns at land bases.
8.) British radar will be active (sector radar, or "bar-dar") since it was a key feature of the battle. It will have a 5 minute refresh rate to simulate the time required for radar reports to filter up to Sector and Group HQs and then back down again to the fighters in the air.
9.) In addition to points awarded for shooting down aircraft, points will be awarded to the LW for ground objects destroyed and to the RAF for ground objects NOT destroyed.
10.) Frame orders must be submitted by each side C-in-C to the Admin CM for a brief review before transmission.
