In the wake of the debacle at Stalingrad, the Soviet Red Army had thrust ahead all the way to the Sea of Azov and liberated the city of Rostov-on-Don on its northeast corner. The Axis forces south of this spearhead were cut off from the rest of the Axis front-line troops, with supplies needing to come by way of the strait of Kerch, where the Sea of Azov meets the Black Sea between eastern Crimea and the west end of the Taman Peninsula. With the northern flank of this supply route at risk from Soviet attacks, Germany’s Seventeenth Army was forced to withdraw from the Caucasus region in southern Russia, setting up a defensive perimeter along the Kuban River delta and across the Taman Peninsula in late January 1943.
It was Hitler’s hope that this bridgehead could be used later as a jumping off point for later advances back into the Caucasus. On the other hand, Stalin saw an opportunity to destroy another German Army. Over the course of the next 9 months, furious battles erupted on the ground and in the air. Several of the pilots involved would become legends; Boris Glinka, Gerhard Barkhorn, Lydia Litvyak, Walter Krupinski, Alexander Pokryshkin, Gunther Rall, Grigory Rechkalov, and a fledgling young Luftwaffe pilot destined to be the Ace of Aces: Erich Hartmann.

- Tu-2 will be limited to only the 2x 500Kg wing bombs to represent the Pe-2.
- Rockets disabled on the Fw 190F-8.
- B-25C will be limited to only the 8x 250Lb bomb load.
- Ju 88 will be limited to only the 4x 250Kg wing bombs to balance the B-25C.
- 37mm cannon pods are disabled on the IL-2.
- Ju 87D will be limited to the 250Kg GP centerline bomb and 2x 250Kg wing bombs.
- 20mm gondolas available only in Hour 1 for the Bf 109G-2/G-6.
Event Rules and Clarifications
- Alt Cap is 16K for fighters, 12K for all bomb/rocket carrying aircraft.
- The minimum requirements for aircraft in the same table cell (ex: P-39D/P-39Q) is the combined total of each type in that cell. It is valid to use just one aircraft type from that cell and not the other.
- Hour 1 target areas must be bombed before T+60 and Hour 1 targets become invalid after T+60.
- Hour 2 targets are only valid for pilots launching a new sortie in Hour 2 or rearming their Hour 1 plane after T+60, or Stuka / IL-2 pilots after T+15.
- Fighters may not strafe down target objects. Only bombers, jabos, and solo attackers will score points for destroying target objects.
- IL-2’s and Stukas will be available in Hour 1(from Hour 1 bases) for pilots shot down early.
- Fw 190F-8, IL-2, and Tu-2 must be used in the ground attack role.
- Fleet targets featured in Frames 1 and 3 are custom that feature a CV and 14 destroyers. The CV’s will be sunk prior to the frame beginning, leaving just the destroyers representing a convoy.
- Hardness of destroyers is set to 500 pounds.
- In Frame 2, each side must assign at least 10 pilots to defense.
- Any non-target object that is destroyed will be restored at the earliest convenience by a CM.
- Scoring values will be reduced in Hour 2 to compensate for an increased sortie rate. Aircraft on their first sortie will always score full points against enemy aircraft even after the second hour begins. A player's first sortie ends once they rearm, land, or are shot down. This is to prevent a situation where a last minute strike in Hour 1 can award full bombing points while only risking 1/4 points for a death on the way home.
- IL-2 and Stuka will receive a points bonus on ground targets. The bonus will be that destroyed objects are worth their Hour 1 value if destroyed by an IL-2 or Stuka.

Barbarossa Blitz

The Molotov–Ribbentrop non-aggression pact was shattered on June 22, 1941 when Nazi Germany launched their invasion of the Soviet Union, code named Operation Barbarossa. By the end of June, Germany’s Army Group South had crushed the Soviet Southwestern Front at Brody and was advancing towards Kiev and into southern Ukraine. Army Group North had secured Lithuania and was chasing the Soviet Northwestern Front out of Latvia. Army Group Center had captured the cities of Bia?ystok and Minsk in Belarus and was advancing towards Smolensk in Russia.
In the air, the Luftwaffe achieved remarkable success in its initial attacks on Soviet air bases. Over 3000 Soviet planes were lost in the first 3 days alone, most of them on the ground. Further losses mounted as the VVS threw aircraft into ground attack battles in a vain attempt to slow the advance of the German troops. Organizational problems also led to heavy losses for the VVS, with top line fighters being allocated to units in small batches and their crews receiving little training in the new LAGG’s, MiG’s and Yak’s before the German attack. Reinforcements were drawn in from the Russian interior including two regiments of MiG-3’s, whose pilots were experienced test pilots, that were sent to bolster the defense of Smolensk. But the Luftwaffe had its own combat seasoned experts flying the Bf 109, Most notably was Werner Molders of Jagdgeschwader 51, who began July with 90 aerial victories.
This FSO will recreate the battles in northwest Russia during July 1941 where the Soviet VVS defended against the onslaught of the Luftwaffe.

Bf 110C must take bombs with the intent to be used in the ground attack role.
Bf 109E may take a bomb in Hour 2 only.
CiC’s satisfy the requirement for aircraft with minimums by assigning squads whose combined minimum commitment level meets or exceeds the aircraft minimum.
Two Hour 1 attack objectives will be assigned each frame. All He 111’s must attack one target and all Bf 110C’s the other. The CiC will decide which target is attacked by which plane type. The CiC must also assign at least 10 total aircraft (Fighters and Attackers) to each objective to satisfy a credible force.
Credible defense force must be at least 10 fighters assigned to each target. Other fighters may be assigned a more flexible role.
Both Hour 1 target areas must be bombed before T+60 and Hour 1 targets become invalid after T+60.
Hour 2 targets are only valid for pilots launching a new sortie in Hour 2 or rearming their Hour 1 plane after T+60.
The Hour 2 target will be a single base.
Flying off the map is forbidden.
Any non-target object that is destroyed will be restored at the earliest convenience by a CM.

Extending the Continuation: Karelia 1944

In the summer and fall of 1944, Karelia was fiercely fought over between Finaland and the Soviet Union. The Luftwaffe aided the Finnish forces with the help of Detachment Kuhlmey which included over a hundred aircraft to be used for air superiority, ground attack, and reconissance. The fighting that ensued on the isthmus was some of the fiercest on the Eastern Front. The 7th and 13th Air Amies of the VVS pressed constant attacks on positions, towns, and airfields on the isthmus in small waves which resulted in pocketed skirmishes between Finnish, German, and Soviet aircraft.
This event seeks to emulate those small skirmishes over Karelia in 1944.

Citadel on the Danube: Budapest 1944-45

By the winter of 1944-45, the Axis Powers on the Eastern Front crumbled under the weight of the onslaught of the Soviet Red Army. Over the preceding year, nearly all the Soviet territory that was once captured by Nazi Germany has been liberated, the Red Army have pushed into Poland and captured Romania, forcing the nation to switch sides in the war. Only one ally of Germany remains in the East to hold back the Red Army - Hungary.
Using Romania as a springboard, the Red Army has swept into eastern Hungary and captured the city of Debrecen. It then trained its sights westward, to the Hungarian capital, Budapest.
The Budapest offensive began on October 29th. The plan was to drive the Axis defenders into Budapest and encircle the city to isolate them. The Soviet 2nd Ukrainian Front was tasked with the northern flank and the 3rd Ukrainian Front the southern flank. The encirclement was completed on December 26th, trapping over 75,000 Axis troops and 800,000 civilians in the pocket.
This FSO will recreate the fierce air action supporting the Soviet offensives and Axis relief attempts in the area of Budapest.

Cäsar's Failure: Baltic Front 1944

In the Summer of 1944, the Baltic Front was busy. Narva had fallen after fierce fighting and Talinn seemed to be next. The Soviet Union launched a massive offensive against the German forces occupying the region. With over 2,000 aircraft, the 3rd Air Army flew countless sorties in support of troops movements, tank operations, as well as bombing raids on cities such as Talinn and Riga. New to the VVS arsenal was the Lavochkin La-7, which made its debut over Estonia and Latvia in September of 1944 with 63 GIAP. In the way of defense, the Luftwaffe had JG 54, JG 51, SG 3, and some reconnaissance units. Despite being heavily outnumbered, JG 54's experten were able to claim dozens of victories in a few short months. By September, the Wehrmacht attempted a counter-offensive named Operation Cäsar, but it was doomed from the beginning and resulted in the German forces being pressed all the way back to Riga.
This event will recreate the daunting task of defending against the onslaught that JG 54 and JG 51 was given.
